May-June 2022 Newsletter

We have finished the year off in true Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw School style! These past few weeks have been extremely busy but rewarding. It has been so nice to reconnect with our families and community and get back to some pre-COVID 19 events and activities.

We have now completed the first two months of the school year. October has been filled with lots of activities in all of the classrooms and we are excited to share our newsletter.

Last week our school had an amazing opportunity to work on fish. With the help of community members, students and staff we proceed 528 jars of fish. Students learned and participated in the many steps involved in the process of working on fish. Elders were present to share Bak̕wa̱mk̓ala and their knowledge of fish processing. It was an amazing learning opportunity and we are excited to share the gift of fish during the opening of the Gukwdzi. Here are a few words we learned:
Sockeye - ma̱łik
Jarred fish - ‘met̕sola
BBQ fish - t̕łuba̱kw
Cutting fish - x̱watła
Fish head - hixt̓i’
